Grandparents Day is September 8th

This Sunday is National Grandparents Day on September 8th.  It is a great day to spend with your grandparents or to let them know in some other special way just how much you love and respect them. This blog post provides some background on how Grandparents Day got started and offers up some great ideas to celebrate this special day of honor. Grandparents Day History National Grandparent’s Day was started by Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade in 1970 and became a national holiday to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor by 1978. The purpose of Grandparents Day has always been about loving and honoring grandparents as well as remembering that they are an excellent source of knowledge, information, and experience for grandchildren. This could not be more true in a day and age when grandparents are often more involved than ever with their grandchildren, helping to serve as a care provider when both parents work. Celebrating Grandparents Day There are many great ways to celebrate Grandparents Day. What you choose to do may involve geography and the preference of your grandparents. However, we have provided a list of ideas here to get you started on your celebration: Take them out for lunch or dinner. This is a treat, especially for any grandparents that may be in a care home or do not get a chance to go out often. Spend the day reminiscing over pictures and family history. This is a great time to remember the special times and capture some of those stories that only the older generations remember. Hold a family reunion. Nothing is more touching than being surrounded by such love. Treat them to a show or shopping trip. Having this time together creates another great memory. [...]

Brighten Your Day with Sunflowers

One of the most beautiful summer flowers is the brilliantly designed sunflower. It is often used to depict the sun and symbolizes friendship and was a considered a favorite of the famous painter, Vincent Van Gogh. However, it has also been recently adopted by the ‘green’ movement to represent its environmental ideals. This blog post offers some more interesting information about sunflower as well as features some of our favorite sunflower arrangements created using the highest quality, freshest flowers from local sunflower farms. Interesting Facts about Sunflowers Here are some facts about sunflowers you may not know: The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. The sunflower turns itself around to face the sun. A sunflower actually consists of 1,000 to 2,000 individual flowers together. What we think of as a sunflower is actually a sunflower head comprised of these thousands of smaller flowers. Sunflowers contain calcium and eleven other minerals. The tallest sunflower recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records was nearly 25 and a half feet tall! Sunflower seeds are a favorite as a raw, cooked, or roasted snack while the oil that is extracted from the seeds are often used for cooking. Our Sunflower Collection Our collection of sunflowers and sunflower arrangements are currently on sale, which provides another reason why these are the perfect choice for a gift or to enjoy in your home or office. Here are some of our favorites from the Allen’s Flowers and Plants sunflower collection: Sunny Sunflowers: Go with simple, yet sophisticated, by selecting an arrangement of just sunflowers. Celebrating the Fourth of July with Flowers

Beyond flags, fireworks, and streamers, the Fourth of July is a reminder of our freedom as a nation and as individuals. It is a special holiday that is often celebrated with parades, parties, and picnics. This makes it a great opportunity to use flowers as part of the decorations and enjoy the natural beauty all around us. Decorating with Flowers The beauty of flowers is that they often can become the decorations thanks to their colorful and patriotic color palette. This includes many flowers in red and white, including roses, carnations, lilies, daisies and tulips. Flowers can also be dyed blue to add to the patriotic palette of Fourth of July flower arrangements. Of course, not all flowers have to be red, white, and blue to befit an Independence Day bash. You can use vases and ribbons in red, white, and blue as well as add pinwheels or miniature firework rockets or stars on sticks within the patriotic flower arrangements. Flowers for All Types of Fourth of July Celebrations There are many places to add flowers on the Fourth of July: Party centerpieces; Picnic table displays; Flower garlands; Hanging baskets on streets or porches; Wreaths and standing displays for cemeteries; and Float decorations. Fourth of July Flower Care Of course, Fourth of July is one of the hottest times of the year even here in San Diego. Therefore, you want to make sure that your flower arrangements for Fourth of July can withstand the heat, sunlight, and humidity. Before the event, keep the flowers in a cool, dark place or at least out of direct sunlight. Make sure the flowers also receive enough fresh water and flower food to keep them nourished so they can look their freshest when on display. [...]

California is the Perfect Source for a Wide Variety of Locally Grown Flowers

We, at Allen’s Flowers and Plants, are focused on providing fresh flowers, which means that we only partner with local flower farmers to ensure we get the best possible selection for our customers. It is just one of the reasons that we have voted the favorite San Diego florist so many years in a row! In San Diego County, we are fortunate to have many excellent flower farmers to partner with that share our vision of fresh and sustainable flowers. Our flower partners are part of the San Diego County Flower and Plant Association, which has over 200 members. Our climate in San Diego provides a great environment for year round flowers that we can locally source for all our flower bouquets, flower arrangements, and flower gifts. We also work with local growers who supply all of our San Diego flower shops with green plants, flowering plants, and fresh fruit for our gift baskets. For example, Carlsbad is known for its flower fields, including tulips, while the inland areas of San Diego County provide drier, more temperate climate for other types of flowers. Some of our partners also focus on organic farming and have initiated ‘green’ practices in their flower farming to ensure that the flowers are available for future generations to enjoy. What locally sourced flowers means for you is that the flowers do not have to travel so far before they get to us for hand arranging and hand delivering. That means more time in your hands as fresh flowers with a longer shelf life for you to enjoy. The bottom line means that this provides you with more value for your money. Other advantages mean that our local partnerships provide us with special access to unique flowers that [...]

A Lighthearted Election: It’s Time to Vote and Agree to Disagree

Is it fantasy to believe that a lighthearted presidential election could be at all possible? Perhaps you might think so, but it wasn’t that long ago it seems that people went around having a little more respect for others and their beliefs. Before, it seemed to us that, while we all might have in the end sided with one side or another, most of the time we stood in the middle supporting various parts of each political party. It seems impossible for one side to just go and get everything right. So, yes it is safe to say that a more lighthearted Election Day is very much an achievable effort. We All Have Views It is important to remember that every one of us has our own views and is entitled to our own opinions on all matters and on goings in this country and its politics. Just because someone thinks differently or votes for one party over another, it does not mean they are the ‘enemy’; they are a person too and, just like you, they have their reasons. As we close in on Election Day, chances are you are going to continue to see more and more people expressing their views on these matters and they may not be your own. Just remember to be polite about it and hope that your emphasis on kindness and respect rubs off on them as well and just maybe Election Day will be a little less tense. It’s Just a Day, But Make it Count! At Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we want to stress this in a couple of ways. Try not to get so worked up over the elections. Cast your vote (please vote responsibly) and then wait it out to [...]
