Fall is Here: Great Ways to Enjoy the Season

Fall began on September 23, 2012 and changes are already noticeable. The temperature is starting to drop and the leaves show signs that they are changing color. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year and arguably the perfect time of the year to be outside whether it is for a football game or just a walk or bicycle ride. We are going to talk about fall traditions today, and these are not the normal ‘holiday’ traditions that everyone does, but something more intimate and meant to be a tradition for your family. In this blog, we are going to discuss some great ideas for celebrating fall and some even better giftideas for the countless birthdays and couple holidays that are coming your way. Celebrating the Fall Season Fall still means that you can enjoy the woods, park, the local fishing spot and, of course, the backyard for games and maybe even a cookout or two. So what else can you do with your family to celebrate the beauty of the changing seasons? A picnic, of course! Sure everyone does them and it isn’t all that unique, but just think about how you can take them to a favorite spot or check out a few different spots over time. Bring a kite, a football, or even a fishing pole if there is a pond and it is allowed. Another tried and true family tradition is the big game. If you and your family love football (or any sport really), why not have a family game? You can even get friends in on it to make the teams bigger. It will be good active fun and a way to turn the season into ongoing social events. Of course, there are many ways [...]

Celebrating Yom Kippur: Seeking Atonement

Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday that is very important in the Hebrew culture. It is a day set aside to seek atonement for sins, and it is often used as a time of reflection and even preparation. Gifts are sometimes given on this holiday as well, but in truth it is a holiday reserved for fasting and spirituality. By tradition though, it actually starts the day before; even though only the day of is referred to as Yom Kippur. History on Traditions Whether you are a devout to the Jewish faith, stepping up to take your heritage and religion more seriously, or just a curious onlooker, there is a lot to learn and take home from Yom Kippur. Referred by some as a holiday and others as just a tradition, this day at its core is about seeking forgiveness and atoning for ones sins; against god and man. So it starts the day before, as the fast begins at sundown it is critical to get morning prayers and afternoon prayers done earlier than usual. Then, when the feast comes, one should only eat easily digested foods that are not salty. These two things will help you to survive the fast without eating or drinking. The fast begins at sundown and from this point on you cannot eat or drink anything, seek atonement with god through prayer and asking forgiveness. Atonement with man though is sometimes not as easy. In the past when villages were small and everyone knew everyone it was a little easier to hunt down the man you wronged and apologize hoping for his forgiveness. Now though in the large society that we live in, this is a little harder to do. While those living more traditionally might [...]

Show Appreciation for the Elderly: Celebrate Grandparents Day with Allen’s Flowers and Plants

September 9th is National Grandparents Day, a day where we should all take a moment of our time to celebrate Grandmas and Grandpas everywhere. After all, they are here for us every other day of the year. However, Grandparents Day is not just about our grandparents but the elderly as a whole; in fact, that is where the idea for this holiday came about. History of the Holiday For Marian McQuade though, getting the state and eventually the country to recognize the elderly in a proper way became what some might call a crusade. What started in Marian’s hometown of Oak Hill, West Virginia as a project to educate youth as to the importance of the elderly and all they had done in life then became a three-year crusade for elderly recognition. Boy did it pay off! In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day as ‘National Grandparents Day.’ As you may have suspected, National Grandparents Day is essentially Mother’s or Father’s Day but for thanking and celebrating the elderly and, of course, our own Grandparents. It is actually recognized in various places worldwide but on different days than our own. National Grandparents Day is a holiday that was founded to further treasure our elderly as they truly are our history and should be revered and respected. Celebrating Grandparents Day Chances are you have a Grandparent or a few to celebrate with or maybe you are one yourself. So when September 9th rolls around, be sure to treat your grandparents to something truly special. At Allen’s Flowers we would like to propose a few great ideas to treating your grandparents to a fun-filled time. For starters, know your Grandparents. Chances are they have always planned things for [...]

Spring Flower Showcase: Tulips

Spring is well underway with summer just around the corner. This time of year brings beautiful flower choices, including such seasonal favorites as tulips.   One of its best features is that it is available in so many of the brightest colors. And, with such a beautiful form and some that even have a lovely scent, it is no wonder that the tulip is so popular among florists and consumers alike. Our three floral shop locations in San Diego are reporting record orders for tulips this year. All about Tulips The vibrant tulip grows all over the world. In Holland, during the tulip bloom, tourists flock from around the world to see these lovely blooms. But, you may not be familiar with how tulips got their start. The tulip was introduced to the world by an Austrian biologist while the name came from a Turkish word that means turban as their shape somewhat resembles one. These bulbous flowers are associated with the lily family and are considered somewhat of a larger flower with an average of six petals each. There are actually over 100 species of tulips and 3,000 registered varieties that have been catalogued and found from their home in Turkey where they were cultivated as far back as 1,000 AD to, of course, Europe and even China and Siberia! Tulips as a Symbol Of the brimming and bright flowers of spring, the tulip has got to be the most representative of happiness. Other international meanings associated with the tulip are dreaminess, a declaration of love, and imagination. They are given in friendship and in love for various occasions. Did you Know? Did you know that you can actually cook with a tulip bulb if you are out of onions? It really [...]

It’s Coming Up Flowers!

It’s that time of year again when you keep checking the landscape to see if the flowers are blooming yet. The temperatures are jumping around and going from chilly nights and warm, almost summery, days. You’ve checked your closet for shorts to wear, but this is the time of year that layers are the way to go. While you wait for the weather to settle, think about bringing the colors of spring into your home and enjoying the incredible variety of blooms available right now. What could be better than a “Sunny Day” arrangement? How about the “Sunny San Diego”? “A Spring Delight” is so uplifting that you won’t even notice when the temperatures plummet. The Colors of Spring Color plays an important role in affecting your mood. According to some scientists, the colors that you surround yourself with can shape your mood and actually make you happier, more confident, bolder, and maybe even up the fun factor. What better way to do that than to surround yourself with the wide range of colors in flowers and plants. Here are some common color mood changers: Blue – gives you strength and confidence; Red – makes you bold and powerful, Pink – lets people know that you are fun and lively. Roses are Red… Whoever said that “roses are red and violets are blue” just wasn’t paying attention to the many other colors found within the rose family. Roses come in red, yellow, white, pink, orange, multi-colored and lavender. And, really, violets are pretty much purple. The “Violets and Butterflies” basket shows off one of April’s loveliest little blooms with panache while the amazing variety of rose arrangements can express you every early spring mood perfectly. Bringing the Outside Inside Making a special [...]
