Take Her to the Homecoming Dance

Fall is finally here. Can’t you feel it in the air? There are some obvious changes that indicate fall’s presence like shorter days and the changing colors to the leaves.   Other changes have been that the new season of football has arrived and some of the public’s favorite television shows, too. What else comes with fall though besides a plethora of birthdays and holidays? The Homecoming dance and game, of course! Homecoming Most of you probably have hands-on experience with the events of Homecoming, a school holiday and festival of sorts that often lasts more than just the evening of the dance and game. In fact, many schools celebrate Homecoming ‘week’ as it really does signify the return of students and teachers to the school for hopefully another great year. The main event is obviously the game and, of course, the dance (surely the ladies and gentlemen will argue about which is truly more important). However, the game and the dance are not the only things that go on during Homecoming week. The week is most often a school spirit week and with that each day has a dress up theme from crazy hair to pajamas. Schools will also sometimes [...]

Plan Your Perfect Wedding with the Right Flowers: A Beautiful Wedding

Recently, at Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we put together an elegant wedding for a lovely couple who hosted their wedding south of the border in Tijuana, Mexico. Our floral specialists strived to arrange the freshest roses, hydrangea, and tulips into splendid bouquets and eye-popping arrangements that were used on the reception tables and as decorations throughout the event. In this blog, we are going to discuss some great ideas for celebrating fall and some even better giftideas for the countless birthdays and couple holidays that are coming your way. Celebrating the Fall Season Fall still means that you can enjoy the woods, park, the local fishing spot and, of course, the backyard for games and maybe even a cookout or two. So what else can you do with your family to celebrate the beauty of the changing seasons? A picnic, of course! Celebrating Yom Kippur: Seeking Atonement

Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday that is very important in the Hebrew culture. It is a day set aside to seek atonement for sins, and it is often used as a time of reflection and even preparation. Gifts are sometimes given on this holiday as well, but in truth it is a holiday reserved for fasting and spirituality. By tradition though, it actually starts the day before; even though only the day of is referred to as Yom Kippur. History on Traditions Whether you are a devout to the Jewish faith, stepping up to take your heritage and religion more seriously, or just a curious onlooker, there is a lot to learn and take home from Yom Kippur. Referred by some as a holiday and others as just a tradition, this day at its core is about seeking forgiveness and atoning for ones sins; against god and man. So it starts the day before, as the fast begins at sundown it is critical to get morning prayers and afternoon prayers done earlier than usual. Then, when the feast comes, one should only eat easily digested foods that are not salty. These two things will help you to survive the [...]

Show Appreciation for the Elderly: Celebrate Grandparents Day with Allen’s Flowers and Plants

September 9th is National Grandparents Day, a day where we should all take a moment of our time to celebrate Grandmas and Grandpas everywhere. After all, they are here for us every other day of the year. However, Grandparents Day is not just about our grandparents but the elderly as a whole; in fact, that is where the idea for this holiday came about. History of the Holiday For Marian McQuade though, getting the state and eventually the country to recognize the elderly in a proper way became what some might call a crusade. What started in Marian’s hometown of Oak Hill, West Virginia as a project to educate youth as to the importance of the elderly and all they had done in life then became a three-year crusade for elderly recognition. Boy did it pay off! In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day as ‘National Grandparents Day.’ As you may have suspected, National Grandparents Day is essentially Mother’s or Father’s Day but for thanking and celebrating the elderly and, of course, our own Grandparents. It is actually recognized in various places worldwide but on different days than our own. National Grandparents Day is a [...]

Wedding Traditions Past and Present

Weddings are looked at by men and women alike as their biggest day -- the day they quit going at the world alone and start a family and take on the world together. And, the biggest day of your life doesn’t just happen. There is the preparation, the wedding itself, the reception and hopefully an open bar. The bride tosses the bouquet and the groom bites the garter and throws it and, of course, they smash cake into each other's faces, which is far more amusing if there is an open bar. These are examples of today's wedding traditions, but from where do they hail? Why do we do what we do and were they done differently before? In a word, yes. The Traditions -- Both New and Old Weddings have been around for a very long time, though way back when you couldn't just marry whoever you loved many weddings were arranged and conducted like business deals to promote both families. That said not all marriages of old were like this and sometimes the proposed marriage candidates did actually fall in love with each other. So, the wedding came, whether they liked it or not and then the after [...]

Some History, Some Fun, and Some Pop Culture: It’s Hot Dog Month!

They say America's favorite pastime is baseball and we can certainly see why. After all, they serve hot dogs there. Everybody (other than vegans who might also consider a vegan hot dog for that matter) loves hotdogs. It's the family fun food for adults and children alike. During the summer it is the most eaten food. Pan fried, boiled and, of course, barbequed, there are many ways to eat them and many more ways to dress them. Ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, salt, pepper and even bacon -- with hotdogs the possibilities are endless, making them the perfect food for any and all summer cookouts. This month, the hot dog is honored the whole month long across the U.S. during hot dog month. A Hot Dog History Everyone’s favorite mystery meat has an origin story and no it's not from a dog’s tail. In reality, the name was thought up by a comic artist in 1901. After finding it difficult to spell 'dachshund Sausage,’ he called them hot dogs instead, and the name stuck.  The Family Favorite The hot dog is loved by many, but many are not sure exactly what’s in a hot dog. In the past, it was scraped [...]

Celebrate June as National Rose Month

Every June, we celebrate the beauty of the magnificent rose as part of a month-long holiday. During this month, we celebrate the history and culture behind the flower’s eternal meaning of love. For centuries, that is what the flower has symbolized. Even in ancient Greece, people believed that the flower was connected to Aphrodite.  Napoleon of France’s own wife adored the flower, growing hundreds of variations of the flower. Speaking of France, they were also the first to bring cultivated roses to our country so that we could enjoy it and grow it here. Thanks to them, June as National Rose Month was born. It’s a Month-Long Holiday! When thinking about how to celebrate, it may not be practical to decide to plant a rose once a day for 30 days.  While those of you with a green thumb that may jump at the chance, others may opt for a different way to celebrate. There are many ways you can show appreciation of the rose, starting with just adding a single rose plant or rose bush to your garden. Not everyone has a garden though, so why not consider ordering a fresh cut dozen with a vase to be used [...]

This time of year brings beautiful flower choices, including such seasonal favorites as tulips.   One of its best features is that it is available in so many of the brightest colors. And, with such a beautiful form and some that even have a lovely scent, it is no wonder that the tulip is so popular among florists and consumers alike. Our three floral shop locations in San Diego are reporting record orders for tulips this year. All about Tulips The vibrant tulip grows all over the world. In Holland, during the tulip bloom, tourists flock from around the world to see these lovely blooms. But, you may not be familiar with how tulips got their start. The tulip was introduced to the world by an Austrian biologist while the name came from a Turkish word that means turban as their shape somewhat resembles one. These bulbous flowers are associated with the lily family and are considered somewhat of a larger flower with an average of six petals each. There are actually over 100 species of tulips and 3,000 registered varieties that have been catalogued and found from their home in Turkey [...]
