One of our favorite summer flowers among staff and customers is the gerbera daisy because its bright coloring reflects the season. Here we provide a little background on this flower variety and introduce you to some of our best flower arrangements that feature this stunning flower. All about Gerbera Daisies The Gerbera Daisy is also known as the African Daisy since it is native to South Africa. However, it is grown in North America as well. The name for the flower is thought to come from the 18th-century German naturalist, Traugott Gerber. Known as herbaceous perennials, these flower have large blooms with yellow central disks. One of our favorite summer holidays is the 4th of July because there are so many city celebrations with fireworks and festivities to ignite the patriotism in all of us plus there are many picnics and barbecues that bring friends, family, and neighbors together. Do You Know Your State Flower?
Every state has an official state flower. Do you know what the state flower for California is? Well, it’s our job to know as a California florist. It’s the golden poppy. We put a blog together to share more about this special flower found throughout California. This flower goes by many names: Golden Poppy, California Poppy, or California Golden Poppy. It is a perennial wild flower that is seen on many of California’s rolling hills and grassy or sandy slopes, and it is known for its flaming color. Some have even referred to it as the cup of gold. It’s been our state flower since 1903. Each year, there are special celebrations to celebrate the poppy, including California Poppy Day on April 6th and Poppy Week from May 13-18, with special festivals and events throughout the state as the poppy comes into bloom for the season, typically from February to September each year. April brought us some much needed rain to the San Diego area, which also has helped our local flower farmers to have a bumper crop of stunning spring flowers not to mention those international flower farmers we work with that provide some of our store flower favorites. March 30th is National Doctor’s Day
A special day is coming up to celebrate that you may not know much about. It’s called National Doctor’s Day and it is celebrated every March 30th in recognition of the contribution that physicians have made for caring for those in physical need. It was first observed on March 30, 1933 in Georgia. The wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond decided that there should be a special day in honor of physicians. The celebration included sending cards of thanks to doctors and placing flowers on the grave sites of those doctors who had died. In 1958, it was adopted as a special day and it was made into a national special day in 1990. This is a day that you can also take to thank your physician or a doctor who may be a family member or friend as well. It is important to recognize that they have a challenging job and often work tirelessly to help others – whether it is to diagnose a problem, deliver a baby, or even save a life. One of our favorite celebrations is just around the corner. That’s Plant a Flower Day on March 12th. Being in the flower business, we believe in the importance and value of sustaining our natural resources by continuing to plant so we can always enjoy these beautiful aspects of nature. The day is meant to remind people of the need to keep planting and taking care of flowers by planting flowers in your own garden or by helping out in a community garden. Participating in this day is a great way to help the Earth and give back while also enjoying a fulfilling hobby outdoors in the beautiful San Diego sunshine. We want to make sure that flowers will always be here for us, so that is why we work with flower farmers that are very conscious of what they do in terms of replanting and continually tending to the various flower varieties to make sure they will always be there for future generations to enjoy.
