The Larkspur – July’s Flower

Just like birthstones, there are certain flowers that are attributed to certain months of the year. The month of July is represented by the Larkspur. This blog post provides some background information about the larkspur and offers some floral arrangements that feature this beautiful July flower. All about the Larkspur Here are some interesting facts to help you get to know the Larkspur: It is a member of the buttercup family. These complex flowers come in a multitude of colors, including red, pink, white, blue, and violet. They are irregularly shaped and bloom in vertical groupings with petals and sepals. Their tall spikes make them a popular choice for cut flower arrangements. These are fragile, short-lived flowers when kept in a vase. The Larkspur plant is actually toxic with stems and seeds that contain alkaloids. Larkspur Flower Arrangements Our floral design team at each of our San Diego flower shops loves to use the Larkspur in their floral designs. Here are some of our favorite flower arrangements with Larkspur: Garden Celebration: This abundant and colorful flower arrangement looks like a garden in full bloom. It is bursting with two feet of fresh flowers, including pink lilies, light purple lisianthus, purple hydrangea and pink roses. The flower arrangement also contains a balanced amount of greenery arranged in a tall glass vase. Sweet San Diego: This larger-than-life flower arrangement is a grand display of pink Oriental lilies, tulips, larkspur, gerberas, white hydrangea, hot pink raunculus, lavender and red roses, purple Monte Casino asters and stock along with greenery displayed in a clear glass hurricane vase. It’s absolutely breathtaking! Lavender Tribute Basket: Beautifully arranged in a round wicker basket, this heartwarming flower arrangement offers a profusion of purple, pink, and lavender blooms, including roses, [...]

California is the Perfect Source for a Wide Variety of Locally Grown Flowers

We, at Allen’s Flowers and Plants, are focused on providing fresh flowers, which means that we only partner with local flower farmers to ensure we get the best possible selection for our customers. It is just one of the reasons that we have voted the favorite San Diego florist so many years in a row! In San Diego County, we are fortunate to have many excellent flower farmers to partner with that share our vision of fresh and sustainable flowers. Our flower partners are part of the San Diego County Flower and Plant Association, which has over 200 members. Our climate in San Diego provides a great environment for year round flowers that we can locally source for all our flower bouquets, flower arrangements, and flower gifts. We also work with local growers who supply all of our San Diego flower shops with green plants, flowering plants, and fresh fruit for our gift baskets. For example, Carlsbad is known for its flower fields, including tulips, while the inland areas of San Diego County provide drier, more temperate climate for other types of flowers. Some of our partners also focus on organic farming and have initiated ‘green’ practices in their flower farming to ensure that the flowers are available for future generations to enjoy. What locally sourced flowers means for you is that the flowers do not have to travel so far before they get to us for hand arranging and hand delivering. That means more time in your hands as fresh flowers with a longer shelf life for you to enjoy. The bottom line means that this provides you with more value for your money. Other advantages mean that our local partnerships provide us with special access to unique flowers that [...]

Allens Flowers for San Diego's Best Florist

Anytime before July 3, 2012, we, at Allens Flowers, ask you to vote for us to be San Diego's best Florist so that we can continue on with our tradition of being the best in the city and maybe all of Southern California. For years, we have strived to bring you all the freshest cut and most beautiful flower arrangements in all of Southern California. Now we hope that you all can remember to help us help you by voting us to be San Diego's best. About Us Our founders opened their first flower stand back in 1980 on a corner in El Cajon and from that minute the outdoor flower stand evolved a business.  Now, with shops in three cities and a place on the top 100 florists in the country, it is clear that we still take the same care as our founders did when selecting only the freshest and best quality flowers to cut, arrange, and sell. We have been on the list of the top 100 florists of America for the past four years now. The award is one of the most distinctive of its kind. With 36,000 florists competing every year, it really means something to us and our founders when we make the cut. We realize that without our loyal customers we would not have these awards, and we are ever thankful to you all and hope that we have shown our thankfulness well. By continuing to provide our clientele with the best quality arrangements and gift baskets at the best value, we hope that we have shown our thankfulness in the best imaginable way. Flowers, Plants, and Gifts for Every Occasion Birthdays, weddings, get-well wish, office parties or just those special items for the [...]

Celebrate June as National Rose Month

Every June, we celebrate the beauty of the magnificent rose as part of a month-long holiday. During this month, we celebrate the history and culture behind the flower’s eternal meaning of love. For centuries, that is what the flower has symbolized. Even in ancient Greece, people believed that the flower was connected to Aphrodite.  Napoleon of France’s own wife adored the flower, growing hundreds of variations of the flower. Speaking of France, they were also the first to bring cultivated roses to our country so that we could enjoy it and grow it here. Thanks to them, June as National Rose Month was born. It’s a Month-Long Holiday! When thinking about how to celebrate, it may not be practical to decide to plant a rose once a day for 30 days.  While those of you with a green thumb that may jump at the chance, others may opt for a different way to celebrate. There are many ways you can show appreciation of the rose, starting with just adding a single rose plant or rose bush to your garden. Not everyone has a garden though, so why not consider ordering a fresh cut dozen with a vase to be used as a centerpiece? Not only would that brighten up the place, but the aroma would freshen up any room. Brightening Others’ Lives Roses also make excellent gift for the right people, of course. While it might not be best to give your boss a big bouquet of roses for his birthday, a loved one or a close family member would surely adore them, especially if they were to know the reasoning behind the gift. There are so many varieties of roses and ways that they can be expertly arranged that you [...]
