Take Her to the Homecoming Dance

Fall is finally here. Can’t you feel it in the air? There are some obvious changes that indicate fall’s presence like shorter days and the changing colors to the leaves.   Other changes have been that the new season of football has arrived and some of the public’s favorite television shows, too. What else comes with fall though besides a plethora of birthdays and holidays? The Homecoming dance and game, of course! Homecoming Most of you probably have hands-on experience with the events of Homecoming, a school holiday and festival of sorts that often lasts more than just the evening of the dance and game. In fact, many schools celebrate Homecoming ‘week’ as it really does signify the return of students and teachers to the school for hopefully another great year. The main event is obviously the game and, of course, the dance (surely the ladies and gentlemen will argue about which is truly more important). However, the game and the dance are not the only things that go on during Homecoming week. The week is most often a school spirit week and with that each day has a dress up theme from crazy hair to pajamas. Schools will also sometimes host parades and festivals as fundraisers. Then, there are pep rallies and sometimes even bonfires. The Big Game and the Dance The Homecoming game and dance are often themed to help keep things interesting and students will sometimes dress appropriately to the theme. While you won’t need flowers for the game, you guys will certainly need them for the dance. At Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we offer a quality selection of dance appropriate flowers as well as various gorgeous arrangements of fall themed flowers. You will be sure to find a [...]

It was a truly elegant white wedding The wedding party was held at a private residence in Mexico, which was decorated by our class act team of floral specialists. Fall is Here: Great Ways to Enjoy the Season

Fall began on September 23, 2012 and changes are already noticeable. The temperature is starting to drop and the leaves show signs that they are changing color. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year and arguably the perfect time of the year to be outside whether it is for a football game or just a walk or bicycle ride. We are going to talk about fall traditions today, and these are not the normal ‘holiday’ traditions that everyone does, but something more intimate and meant to be a tradition for your family. In this blog, we are going to discuss some great ideas for celebrating fall and some even better giftideas for the countless birthdays and couple holidays that are coming your way. Celebrating the Fall Season Fall still means that you can enjoy the woods, park, the local fishing spot and, of course, the backyard for games and maybe even a cookout or two. So what else can you do with your family to celebrate the beauty of the changing seasons? A picnic, of course! Sure everyone does them and it isn’t all that unique, but just think about how you can take them to a favorite spot or check out a few different spots over time. Bring a kite, a football, or even a fishing pole if there is a pond and it is allowed. Another tried and true family tradition is the big game. If you and your family love football (or any sport really), why not have a family game? You can even get friends in on it to make the teams bigger. It will be good active fun and a way to turn the season into ongoing social events. Of course, there are many ways [...]

Celebrating Yom Kippur: Seeking Atonement

Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday that is very important in the Hebrew culture. It is a day set aside to seek atonement for sins, and it is often used as a time of reflection and even preparation. Gifts are sometimes given on this holiday as well, but in truth it is a holiday reserved for fasting and spirituality. By tradition though, it actually starts the day before; even though only the day of is referred to as Yom Kippur. History on Traditions Whether you are a devout to the Jewish faith, stepping up to take your heritage and religion more seriously, or just a curious onlooker, there is a lot to learn and take home from Yom Kippur. Referred by some as a holiday and others as just a tradition, this day at its core is about seeking forgiveness and atoning for ones sins; against god and man. So it starts the day before, as the fast begins at sundown it is critical to get morning prayers and afternoon prayers done earlier than usual. Then, when the feast comes, one should only eat easily digested foods that are not salty. These two things will help you to survive the fast without eating or drinking. The fast begins at sundown and from this point on you cannot eat or drink anything, seek atonement with god through prayer and asking forgiveness. Atonement with man though is sometimes not as easy. In the past when villages were small and everyone knew everyone it was a little easier to hunt down the man you wronged and apologize hoping for his forgiveness. Now though in the large society that we live in, this is a little harder to do. While those living more traditionally might [...]

Show Appreciation for the Elderly: Celebrate Grandparents Day with Allen’s Flowers and Plants

September 9th is National Grandparents Day, a day where we should all take a moment of our time to celebrate Grandmas and Grandpas everywhere. After all, they are here for us every other day of the year. However, Grandparents Day is not just about our grandparents but the elderly as a whole; in fact, that is where the idea for this holiday came about. History of the Holiday For Marian McQuade though, getting the state and eventually the country to recognize the elderly in a proper way became what some might call a crusade. What started in Marian’s hometown of Oak Hill, West Virginia as a project to educate youth as to the importance of the elderly and all they had done in life then became a three-year crusade for elderly recognition. Boy did it pay off! In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day as ‘National Grandparents Day.’ As you may have suspected, National Grandparents Day is essentially Mother’s or Father’s Day but for thanking and celebrating the elderly and, of course, our own Grandparents. It is actually recognized in various places worldwide but on different days than our own. National Grandparents Day is a holiday that was founded to further treasure our elderly as they truly are our history and should be revered and respected. Celebrating Grandparents Day Chances are you have a Grandparent or a few to celebrate with or maybe you are one yourself. So when September 9th rolls around, be sure to treat your grandparents to something truly special. At Allen’s Flowers we would like to propose a few great ideas to treating your grandparents to a fun-filled time. For starters, know your Grandparents. Chances are they have always planned things for [...]

Green is the New Black: Going Green with Plants

With people’s concerns about global pollution and the climate change problems, it is pretty easy to understand why so many are going green. They even sell shoes made from recycled materials while others are looking to add solar and reduce their carbon footprint in as many ways as possible. We will let you decide, but whether it is or is not, being even a little environmentally courteous can not only help you, but it will also help others. You don’t have to drive a Prius and go to rallies to save the ear th. Through just a few simple changes, you can leave behind a much more environmentally courteous footprint. Potted Plants Like the title suggests, owning potted plants are a great way to help the environment; especially your immediate one. Plants of all kinds give off oxygen and, according to numerous studies, also clean the air a help people in a variety of ways. If you work in a stuffy cubicle or just want to help freshen up at home, one or two potted plants can really help improve your quality of living. Don’t stop there though -- potted plants make great gifts too and they can be truly sentimental when given to the right person. When you buy flowers for someone, it is often a way of telling them how much they mean to you. Well, plants can work the same way. However, if you have more environmentally aware friends, then what better way to say, ‘Thinking of you,’ than with a gift that not only shows you care about them, but that you also care about what they care about. Of course, not just potted plants help the environment; all plants do and they are even beautiful to [...]

Wedding Traditions Past and Present

Weddings are looked at by men and women alike as their biggest day -- the day they quit going at the world alone and start a family and take on the world together. And, the biggest day of your life doesn’t just happen. There is the preparation, the wedding itself, the reception and hopefully an open bar. The bride tosses the bouquet and the groom bites the garter and throws it and, of course, they smash cake into each other's faces, which is far more amusing if there is an open bar. These are examples of today's wedding traditions, but from where do they hail? Why do we do what we do and were they done differently before? In a word, yes. The Traditions -- Both New and Old Weddings have been around for a very long time, though way back when you couldn't just marry whoever you loved many weddings were arranged and conducted like business deals to promote both families. That said not all marriages of old were like this and sometimes the proposed marriage candidates did actually fall in love with each other. So, the wedding came, whether they liked it or not and then the after party. Tossing the bouquet:  We all know this one, but do you know how it started? Back in England, marriage was good luck, as the combining of a family meant more money and less poverty. The crowd at a wedding, believing that the bride was somehow lucky, would rip at her dress to get a piece of the 'luck' and the bride would toss the bouquet and run away. Today, the bride just tosses the bouquet and the woman that catches it is supposed to be the next to wed. Giving [...]
