Hanukkah Flowers, Plants, Gifts and Traditions

The Hanukkah holiday celebration is here and many families all over the country are gathering in fellowship to celebrate the miracle of the Menorah. This celebration will go on for eight whole days in remembrance of the story of the miracle of the lighting of the Menorah in the Jewish temple. They had found only a small amount of oil, but the Menorah burned on for eight whole days an event that marked the start of Hanukkah. Flowers for Hanukkah Secularly, Hanukkah is compared to Christmas and often gifts are given during the celebration -- sometimes gifts are actually exchanged every single day over the eight day period of the holiday. So this Hanukkah holiday, why not celebrate with the gift of flowers or a gift basket? Covering Your Holiday Decorating This Spirited Season

The holidays are a time of great festivities and whether you go at them alone or with the family and friends doesn’t change the fact that everyone at least to some degree gets into the holiday spirit. Whether you want to break away into something new or are a slave to the family traditions, it doesn’t matter. When you decorate this year, remember that San Diego’s best florist has you covered for all of your decorating needs, including Christmas flowers, Christmas flowering plants, Christmas centerpieces, and fresh garlands and wreaths. Decorating on a Budget Who isn’t decorating on a budget these days? Take a look at our economy and its obvious why couponing has become so popular. Well, we have a few great decorating tips that shouldn’t cost you more than a dime and some time. If you have kids, know that these decorations make great crafts, too. You may remember popcorn strings from when you were a kid. It involves stringing popcorn on thread like a bead and making what looks like snowflakes on the Christmas tree. Speaking of Christmas trees, why not make your own ornaments? With Christmas colored construction paper and some paint, crayons, or markers, you can cut and draw shapes and Christmas pictures to hang on the tree. Kids love it and it adds such a personal touch to your Christmas décor. You can make wreaths from items around the house, such as recycled fabrics, ties, corks, cards and the like, which means you can make quite a few and place them all around the house while you save the fresh wreath that you get at Allen’s Flowers and Plants for the front door. Make snowflakes and angels with the kids. You can do this by [...]

The Many Faces of the Chrysanthemum

The November birth flower is the Chrysanthemum. Like birthstones, birth flowers represent the month in which someone was born. They are often associated with superstitious beliefs and generally the meaning of these stones and, in this case flowers, is associated with one’s personality. At Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we believe that the Chrysanthemum flower would make a delightful gift to anyone with a November birthday but in taking its meaning to heart, it would serve others just as well, too. The flower is beautiful, being first discovered in a gold color but is also known to grow in white and red. The Origin of the Chrysanthemum The flower was first used in China well over a few hundred years ago. It was used in culinary for mixed greens and other salad like dishes as well as made into a tea. It has even been made into a type of rice wine as the Chrysanthemum flower is known for its sweet taste and aroma. Unlike other sweet things though, the Chrysanthemum flower is also known for its effectiveness as a strong insect repellant as well as killer. The Color and Meaning Throughout history, we have associated colors with meanings. For example, red has stood for passion, which has meant love and, at times, also represented bloodshed and war. With the Chrysanthemum flower, a red colored bud like many other red flowers, symbolizes love. The white represents truth and the yellow a slight love. The Chrysanthemum flower in general though represents optimism and joyfulness. According to the meaning of the Chrysanthemum, a person who is born in November should be all of those things, but at Allen’s Flowers and Plants we feel that others can be those things too. So, while the flower [...]

Set the Thanksgiving Holiday Table with Beautiful Thanksgiving Flowers

Thanksgiving is about a special time and creating memories with those we love. Many of us will be having friends and family over for a grand feast and festivities. Like the dinner that you will be slaving away on in the kitchen, chances are you want everything to be perfect. You hope everyone enjoys themselves and the food, so what better way to lighten the mood but with beautiful floral decorations at and around the dinner table. At Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we couldn’t think of a better thing ourselves. Setting a Beautiful Table for the Feast Impress your guests even before the bird is brought out for carving. At Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we have just the means to help you do that this fine Thanksgiving Day. With our countless number of Thanksgiving-themed floral centerpieces and even more floral arrangements and bouquets all in the flavor of autumn, all of these themed pieces of floral art are perfect to decorate your home for the holiday. Take one of our beautifully designed floral centerpieces that will perfectly complement any Thanksgiving feast. For example, “Allen’s Cornucopia” is a centerpiece that stays to the Thanksgiving centerpiece tradition but still manages to bring something new and unique to the table. Of course, you don’t have to stop with just the centerpiece. There are many great ways to add a bit of flair to the feast and let’s all just face the fact that not every table has room for a centerpiece with so much great food present. We offer many autumn-themed floral bouquets, which at first may seem silly if you aren’t taking a lady friend out, but take apart the bouquet and what do you have? You have flowers with the stem and [...]

Shake Their Hand: Celebrating Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is upon us and we believe it is ever important to give our thanks to America’s servicemen and women for their endless sacrifice. Allen’s Flowers and Plants believe that no Veteran should go unloved ever and to know that so many are suffering on this side of the states pains us greatly. No man or woman should be alone after serving for this country for when they did from that moment on and to eternity they became our family. Every one of us owes them for what they have done, keeping freedom free and protecting our friends and families. To every veteran we say, thank you for your service to our nation and her people. A History of the Holiday Veterans Day was first celebrated at the end of World War 1 on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month of the year 1918. Like Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, Veterans Day is celebrated to commemorate and decorate our military to thank them for their time, service and sacrifice in keeping this nation and her values alive. We share the belief of others that not a single veteran should ever feel alone after serving to protect our lives and freedoms. Celebrate and Thank Chances are you know someone who has served in the military or is serving in the military. While they probably know just how much you care for them and thank them for doing what so many others could not, this Veterans Day, be sure to remind them of how much they mean to you. There are many ways one can go about this, too. If they live far away, be sure to write them, call them, or send them a little something [...]

A Lighthearted Election: It’s Time to Vote and Agree to Disagree

Is it fantasy to believe that a lighthearted presidential election could be at all possible? Perhaps you might think so, but it wasn’t that long ago it seems that people went around having a little more respect for others and their beliefs. Before, it seemed to us that, while we all might have in the end sided with one side or another, most of the time we stood in the middle supporting various parts of each political party. It seems impossible for one side to just go and get everything right. So, yes it is safe to say that a more lighthearted Election Day is very much an achievable effort. We All Have Views It is important to remember that every one of us has our own views and is entitled to our own opinions on all matters and on goings in this country and its politics. Just because someone thinks differently or votes for one party over another, it does not mean they are the ‘enemy’; they are a person too and, just like you, they have their reasons. As we close in on Election Day, chances are you are going to continue to see more and more people expressing their views on these matters and they may not be your own. Just remember to be polite about it and hope that your emphasis on kindness and respect rubs off on them as well and just maybe Election Day will be a little less tense. It’s Just a Day, But Make it Count! At Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we want to stress this in a couple of ways. Try not to get so worked up over the elections. Cast your vote (please vote responsibly) and then wait it out to [...]

The Sweetest Day of the Year

The Sweetest Day is a day about being kind to those less fortunate, being sweet just to be sweet. The Sweetest Day is celebrated the 3rd Saturday of October, but do we really need a designated day to show some kindness? At Allen’s Flowers and Plants, we hope that it isn’t the case. After all, we believe that, while a designated day of being sweet is just the right medicine for the world, all of us as a whole should at least try to make a difference and make a stranger smile today or tomorrow and perhaps everyday this year. A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way The Sweetest Day was started in the 1920s, and it was celebrated by the committee who started it that handed out thousands of candies and sweets to those less fortunate. Over the years, it has evolved some into a holiday about giving a little something to those you love in an effort to show them just how much they mean to you. So, this sweetest day or any day really, a little something for someone special can really brighten their days. Because the truth is we never really know how a little kindness could affect someone we love or a stranger. Celebrate Kindness On this day, why not get a few little things for the ones you love? Remember that an honest gift expects nothing in return. The people you care for probably care for you too, but they may not know about the Sweetest Day. So what better a way to show them, than to get them a little something sweet? Great gifts for Sweetest Day include: Candy, of course, as there are hundreds if not thousands of brands and pretty much everyone [...]
