Sunday, August 4th is Friendship Day!

Just around the corner is a special day to recognize all the friends in your life. That’s right, there is a special day each year to commemorate them and let them know you appreciate all that they do as your friend. This blog post provides some background on Friendship Day as well as gives you some ideas from our extensive collection of flower arrangements, plants, and gifts that you may want to gift to all your near (and not so near) and dear friends. All about Friendship Day Also known as International Friendship Day and celebrated since 1958 when it was started in Paraguay, this special day is recognized in the United States on the first Sunday in August. It gained interest thanks to the greeting card companies as a way to honor friends. The first time Friendship Day was celebrated in the U.S. was around 1935 although it was introduced a few years earlier by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards. Despite being promoted by a card company, Friendship Day is focused on quality time with friends, sharing those moments and traits that led you to become friends in the first place. Gift Ideas for Friendship Day That doesn’t mean you can’t give your friends a few gifts to also show them that you love them. At the top of the list for Friendship Day are flowers and cards. However, we thought you might like to see a few Friendship Day ideas that offer value, variety, and quality to let your friends know just how much you care: Sunny San Diego: Let your friends know that they brighten your day by sending them a flower arrangement full of vibrant flowers and greenery. The Larkspur – July’s Flower

Just like birthstones, there are certain flowers that are attributed to certain months of the year. The month of July is represented by the Larkspur. This blog post provides some background information about the larkspur and offers some floral arrangements that feature this beautiful July flower. All about the Larkspur Here are some interesting facts to help you get to know the Larkspur: It is a member of the buttercup family. These complex flowers come in a multitude of colors, including red, pink, white, blue, and violet. They are irregularly shaped and bloom in vertical groupings with petals and sepals. Their tall spikes make them a popular choice for cut flower arrangements. These are fragile, short-lived flowers when kept in a vase. The Larkspur plant is actually toxic with stems and seeds that contain alkaloids. Larkspur Flower Arrangements Our floral design team at each of our San Diego flower shops loves to use the Larkspur in their floral designs. Here are some of our favorite flower arrangements with Larkspur: Garden Celebration: This abundant and colorful flower arrangement looks like a garden in full bloom. It is bursting with two feet of fresh flowers, including pink lilies, light purple lisianthus, purple hydrangea and pink roses. Celebrating the Fourth of July with Flowers

Beyond flags, fireworks, and streamers, the Fourth of July is a reminder of our freedom as a nation and as individuals. It is a special holiday that is often celebrated with parades, parties, and picnics. This makes it a great opportunity to use flowers as part of the decorations and enjoy the natural beauty all around us. Decorating with Flowers The beauty of flowers is that they often can become the decorations thanks to their colorful and patriotic color palette. This includes many flowers in red and white, including roses, carnations, lilies, daisies and tulips. Flowers can also be dyed blue to add to the patriotic palette of Fourth of July flower arrangements. Of course, not all flowers have to be red, white, and blue to befit an Independence Day bash. You can use vases and ribbons in red, white, and blue as well as add pinwheels or miniature firework rockets or stars on sticks within the patriotic flower arrangements. Flowers for All Types of Fourth of July Celebrations There are many places to add flowers on the Fourth of July: Party centerpieces; Picnic table displays; Flower garlands; Hanging baskets on streets or porches; Wreaths and standing displays for cemeteries; and Float decorations. Fourth of July Flower Care Of course, Fourth of July is one of the hottest times of the year even here in San Diego. Therefore, you want to make sure that your flower arrangements for Fourth of July can withstand the heat, sunlight, and humidity. Before the event, keep the flowers in a cool, dark place or at least out of direct sunlight. Make sure the flowers also receive enough fresh water and flower food to keep them nourished so they can look their freshest when on display. [...]

California is the Perfect Source for a Wide Variety of Locally Grown Flowers

We, at Allen’s Flowers and Plants, are focused on providing fresh flowers, which means that we only partner with local flower farmers to ensure we get the best possible selection for our customers. It is just one of the reasons that we have voted the favorite San Diego florist so many years in a row! In San Diego County, we are fortunate to have many excellent flower farmers to partner with that share our vision of fresh and sustainable flowers. Our flower partners are part of the San Diego County Flower and Plant Association, which has over 200 members. Our climate in San Diego provides a great environment for year round flowers that we can locally source for all our flower bouquets, flower arrangements, and flower gifts. We also work with local growers who supply all of our San Diego flower shops with green plants, flowering plants, and fresh fruit for our gift baskets. For example, Carlsbad is known for its flower fields, including tulips, while the inland areas of San Diego County provide drier, more temperate climate for other types of flowers. Some of our partners also focus on organic farming and have initiated ‘green’ practices in their flower farming to ensure that the flowers are available for future generations to enjoy. What locally sourced flowers means for you is that the flowers do not have to travel so far before they get to us for hand arranging and hand delivering. That means more time in your hands as fresh flowers with a longer shelf life for you to enjoy. The bottom line means that this provides you with more value for your money. Other advantages mean that our local partnerships provide us with special access to unique flowers that [...]

Memorial Day: Remembering those Who Died in Service to Our Country

With many of you most likely making your Memorial Day plans that involve escaping work and school with a weekend getaway, trip to the beach, or barbecue, it’s important to remember the real purpose of this special day of remembrance. Our blog post this week covers the meaning of Memorial Day, local San Diego Memorial Day celebrations, and ideas for remembering loved ones with Memorial Day wreaths or patriotic flowers. The Meaning of Memorial Day The first Memorial Day was celebrated in 1868 by its creator, General John Logan, who also started the tradition of laying flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. Since then, it has become a Federal holiday where the country celebrates with local Memorial Day parades and remembrance ceremonies as well as the Moment of Remembrance that occurs at 3pm local time in your city. It’s a moment to stop and quietly reflect on what all soldiers who have died fighting for freedom have done for us and our country. Memorial Day Celebrations in San Diego In San Diego, there are a number of ways to join in Memorial Day celebrations: Memorial Day at Embarcadero – Visit the Maritime Museum of San Diego and take a cruise on the bay. The USS MidwayLegacy Week --The USS Midway will be hosting a variety of events to honor our military, including a Veterans Wreath Ceremony and two concerts.  Military heroes will also be honored and remembered on the flight deck hosted by American Legion Post. Memorial Day Observances Day Ceremony – The Veterans Museum & Memorial Center will be holding a special service event in Balboa Park. The Vietnam Veterans of America – The Vietnam Veterans of America will be hosting a memorial service at the San Diego [...]
