Poinsettia Day is December 12

While you may connect poinsettias with Christmas, you may not realize that there is an official Poinsettia Day in December on December 12th that recognizes this beautiful symbol of Christmas. This blog post offers some information on Poinsettia Day and provides you with information on this year’s poinsettia collection at Allen’s Flowers and Plants. About Poinsettia Day The reason that Poinsettia Day is celebrated on December 12th each year is because this is the date that Joe Roberts Poinsett died. He was an American botanist, minister to Mexico, and physician who discovered the poinsettia plan in Southern Mexico in 1828 and sent it back to his home in Charleston, South Carolina. This special day was created in 2002 by the House of Representatives to also honor Paul Ecke, Jr. who is considered to be the founder of the poinsettia industry because he discovered how to cause the poinsettia seedlings to branch and grow. Today, the Ecke ranch in Encinitas, California continues to promote and grow the poinsettia plan, which has become known as a beloved symbol of Christmas. It is now a popular blooming plant that is displayed around the world during the holidays in both its red and white varieties. Our Poinsettia Collection With Encinitas just a few miles away from our San Diego flower shops, we are proud to include local varieties of the poinsettia in all our locations as well as through our online flower store. This year, we have a few different options to choose from when buying a poinsettia to display in your home or office or to give as a gift to a loved one, colleague, or client.  Our poinsettia options include the following choices: Christmas red poinsettia in regular, large, and double varieties; Christmas [...]

Thanksgiving Floral Decorating Ideas

As one of our favorite holidays, Thanksgiving is a time for entertaining, which means lots of decorating the house to get in the spirit. And, when it comes to decorating and the rich and robust colors of fall, flowers and greenery hold center court. We have put together some Thanksgiving floral decorating ideas that you can incorporate in your home and for your Thanksgiving feast table (and, for some, your Thanksgivvukah table!). Del Mar Sunset Thanksgiving Centerpieces Thanksgiving centerpieces come in all styles and arrangements, including your traditional cornucopia arrangement in a wicker basket shaped as the horn of plenty or a floral centerpiece with candles. However, there are other decorations you can consider. For example, why not ask the floral design team at Allen’s Flowers and Plants to design a custom Thanksgiving centerpiece for you that is arranged within a treasured family vase or heirloom bowl? This personalizes it and provides a symbol of the family coming together to share their appreciation and give thanks for what they all have. Also consider some unique items like stalks of wheat or dried flowers and leaves arranged together in a tin container or vase. You could also order a topiary from Allen’s Flowers and Plants to create a dramatic and elegant Thanksgiving centerpiece statement. Then, there are the menurkeys, which combine the menorah and Thanksgiving symbols into one Thanksgivvukah centerpiece. Thanksgiving Table Flowers Thanksgiving flowers do not have to just grace the center of the table. You can create individual flower arrangements at each place setting. You might place a long stem rose on each plate as a welcome, tucking it into the folded fabric napkin. Or, you could float flowers in wine glasses to create a sophisticated touch for [...]
